Sleep disorders are a major health concern affecting 40% of adult Canadians. Left untreated, sleep disorders can lead to serious medical conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Car crashes and work-related accidents are also more common and more serious in people with sleep disorders.
The Sleep Disorders Program at UBC Hospital
In recent years, sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea have gained increased recognition as a serious health concern. UBC Hospital if home to one of the largest sleep disorders programs in the country. Established in 1981, the Sleep Disorders Program at UBC Hospital is the provincial referral centre for complex sleep disorders – seeing more than 5,000 patients a year from all of BC, Yukon, and some parts of Alberta.
What makes the program unique at UBC Hospital is that it is the only multi-disciplinary program in BC, providing access to both home and in-hospital sleep monitoring. For patients, it is the only place in the province to have your sleep concerns assessed by multiple medical specialties, which provides the most comprehensive assessment and treatment plan.
Donor support is critical to helping the Sleep Disorders Program achieve their goal of providing relief, treatment and hope to a growing population of British Columbians who need it.
