Our Story

1971

Our story begins way back in the early 70s, when Sleep Shop’s founder Haji Manji came to Canada as an immigrant in 1972 foreseeing a new life for himself and his family. And it was in this new-beginnings environment that he got a job as a salesman in a furniture store, where he stood for almost 9 years and ignited his passion for selling mattresses. 

Every piece sold was a touching experience for both the customer and himself, as he noticed the impact of each purchase in people's lives and how rewarding it was to help them get a better night of sleep and improve so many other areas in their personal life.

Inspired by that, Haji then gathered this passion and the entrepreneurial background he had to leave behind in his home country and decided the start his own business here in beautiful British Columbia, a whole store specializing in products for sleep, offering a customized experience for each customer considering their sleeping habits, aspirations and overcoming pain points.

1979

And so Sleep Shop was established in 1979, with one goal in mind: to improve the quality of your life with proper sleep. This business model was a pioneer at the time and brought people’s attention by offering a special selection of products from different categories, and a highly customized sale to ensure every person could find the right mattress, pillow, or sleep accessory for their needs. We opened our first store in Richmond, where we fixed our roots and stand until today.

1982

In the early years in the business, Haji and his dad paid attention to every minimum detail in the operation, making sure the customer service was top-notch before any expansion. During the day, they worked on the store floor as salespeople, gaining experience and becoming sleep experts as pioneers in a business specific for sleeping products, and at night, they would go on to do the deliveries themselves.

1985

Understanding more and more the needs and wants of our most valuable asset – our customers–, the Sleep Shop team offered free delivery to every purchase from the very beginning, along with a convenient time frame not to interfere with the customer's routine.

1989

Finishing up the first decade in business and gathering an impressive number of satisfied customers, Sleep Shop’s growth so far was mostly due to word of mouth. At this point, we took a very important step in our expansion in the greater Vancouver area as we opened our first store in Langley in 1989. Since then, this location brought a great new market and we stand in the area until today, now in a different location but in the same metropolitan area.

In this same year, other remarkable memories took place in our story too. After finishing his studies, Haji's son, Farouq Manji, decided to join the family's business, following his father's steps by bringing innovation and adding up to our passion for getting people a better sleep.

1990

As the operation grew, we saw an emerging need to invest in our own delivery fleet to increase our efficiency and keep a quality standard that followed our commitment to customer service. Until today, our delivery crew carefully handles every order and carries along our products until they get to your home. In addition, customers can opt for a set-up service for a fee.

Going into the 90s with a strong base of satisfied customers referring Sleep Shop to family and friends, we expanded our marketing efforts and started building our presence in the media through newspapers and radio ads.

2005

Catching up on market trends, we launched our first website, an institutional page that gathered all commercial information, sleeping tips, and educational subjects to serve a community of happy snoozers online and position Sleep Shop as a business of sleep experts.

2010

A few years later, with a solid retail experience based on our physical stores and the desire to expand into the e-commerce world, our website went through a renewal and started taking online orders, delivering now not only throughout Lower Mainland but to all locations in Canada.

2011

Another important step in Sleep Shop’s journey was joining the dRSG group (Dufresne Retail Solutions Group). This association allowed us to fortify our buying power and increase our portfolio to the same level as most of the big box retailers out in British Columbia, plus enlarged our resources for business expansion such as marketing tools, promotional communications, and access to exclusive products from renowned brands like Tempurpedic, Stearns & Foster, Beautyrest and many more that you can find available in our website or in-store due to exclusive mattress programs.

2016

Getting closer to 40 years in business, attending the greater Vancouver area with the best selection of sleep products, Sleep Shop opened a new store, now in North Vancouver. This location is until today a key point in our operation, offering luxurious options in a sleep boutique store style.

2017

Introducing a new technology to easily match customers’ preferences and needs with the right products, Sleep Shop launched an interactive feature on our website, the sleep quiz. As you answer a few quick questions, our system is able to make assertive product recommendations and our clients get an additional 10% OFF when taking it.

2022

In 2022, we celebrated over 43 years as a local family-owned and operated business. It was a year marked by innovation and growth, as we expanded our product range and introduced new sleep technologies designed to enhance your comfort and well-being.

We launched a new line of sleep accessories, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Our dedication to community involvement also grew stronger, with increased participation in local events and partnerships with charitable organizations to give back to the community that has supported us for decades.

2024

Sleep Shop announced the introduction of cutting-edge sleep technologies and new product lines that push the boundaries of comfort and innovation. Our latest offerings include The Dawn House, bringing aging in place and health monitoring in to the home. 

2024 marks 45 years since Sleep Shop first opened its doors to Vancouverites. A special year that will be marked with special promotions in June. We received a special message from the Mayor of Richmond, BC, where it all started! Celebrating our longstanding commitment to the community and our contributions to improving the quality of sleep for countless families.

Adding to the excitement, we launched a new TV commercial featuring Randip Janda and Bedgear during Hockey Night in Canada. This commercial, broadcast in both English and Punjabi, highlights our innovative products and commitment to serving a diverse community of sleep enthusiasts.
